Well Managed Growth Earns the NISD High Grades

Despite it's growth the Northwest school system seems to have avoided the pitfalls many expanding districts experience and continues to keep its schools within the Exemplary or Recognized ratings of the state. The district seems to be focused on a "well-rounded" program too. In 2010 the NWISD was one of only 13 Texas school systems to receive the national honor of "Best Communities for Music Education". This award recognizes the Northwest ISD's comprehensive, well-rounded music education and builds on it's "elite group" status of 2009. And take a look at some of the other more recent honors Northwest ISD has received...

    • NWISD's transformed Algebra I program earned state recognition as one of five school districts to be recognized by TEA for offering exceptional high school completion and college readiness programs implemented with High School Allotment funds.

    • Northwest High School was one of only 27 schools in the state selected to win the CREST Award for Counseling Excellence for 2009. The Texas School Counselor Association's CREST program recognizes schools with an outstanding counseling program.

    • Northwest High School received the 2009 College Readiness Award from the Texas ACT Council. Less than 5 percent of all Texas high schools received the award designed to recognize schools for maintaining or increasing the number of students taking the ACT Assessment over the past five years and for significantly increasing their level of achievement and college readiness.

    • Four Northwest ISD schools received recognition as part of the 2009 Just for the Kids Campaign for Higher Performing Schools in Texas. Northwest High School, Gene Pike Middle School, Justin Elementary, and Samuel Beck Elementary earned the honor by achieving better improvement rates for their students compared with other schools with similar demographics.

    • The District met and exceeded the federal government's standards for having 100 percent "Highly Qualified" teachers in core subject areas. Northwest has maintained the 100 percent "Highly Qualified" standard since the 2004-2005 school year.

    • Northwest ISD received a rating of "Superior Achievement" under Texas' Schools FIRST financial accountability rating system for the eighth consecutive year. The "Superior Achievement" rating is the state's highest, demonstrating the quality of NISD's financial management and reporting system.

NISD Leading at a National Level

While Northwest's list of accomplishments continues, it's also worth noting that students have achieved statewide and national recognition as well. From Destination ImagiNation team competitions, national speech and debate tournaments, sports, and even Visual Basic.net programming challenges, the kids throughout the district have showcased their education at the highest levels.
